5G has become one of the first and main technologies which countries and smartphone companies worldwide are pursuing. Laying the ground for the commercial application of 5G is about to begin this year. 5G is predicted to increase signal coverage quality, lower power consumption, increase data speed exponentially and lower latency. Through such technological advancements, we will be entering a world where interconnectedness is instantaneous, changing consumer behavior and the way we see smartphone communications as a whole.
Huawei has launched the fastest 5G foldable smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate X, during the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2019. The smartphone which intricately combines 5G technology along with the sophisticated fold design, has given the attendees a glimpse of what a revolutionary connectivity and a maximum immersive user experience would look like. The smartphone has received numerous media accolades thanks to its high strength flexible OLED panel, Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge, 7nm multi-mode modem chipset Balong 5000, and a high-capacity 4500mAh battery that supports the world’s fastest 55W HUAWEI SuperCharge; earning it the prestigious “Best Connected Mobile Device of Mobile World Congress 2019” award for newly released or soon-to-be-listed mobile products, representing the highest recognition in pioneering future technologies. The award was given by GSMA, the entity which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, uniting more than 750 operators with over 350 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem and is also the MWC Barcelona 2019 event producer. The device did not fail to impress international media either, which labeled it as ‘stunning’, ‘impressive’ and ‘an innovation powerhouse’ – giving 30 other MWC Barcelona 2019.
The device is Huawei’s first foldable 2-in-1 smartphone and tablet. With its unique and innovative hinge, the HUAWEI Mate X unfolds like a falcon extending its wings – hence the name Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge. The ‘hinge’ is integrated in the display, folding out the screen and turning the device into a completely flat surface. Once unfolded, the smartphone transforms into an eight-inch tablet that features almost double the viewing area of the device in smartphone mode.
The tablet itself is thin (5.4mm thick) yet – according to Huawei’s tests – designed to be highly durable, featuring a new flexible 6.6-inch dual OLED display equipped with superior heat dissipation for it to be both practical and safe. The display was designed to bring a highly immersive experience to users through Huawei’s bezel-less FullView display technology. With no holes or notches on the panel, users can have the ultimate viewing experience.
Besides a better viewing experience, unprecedented smart interactions between user and device are now possible, taking the experience to a higher level. A first example is the easy ability to switch from tablet to phone, which offers users more flexibility, catering to their different needs. Whether for work or entertainment purposes, users can have a more immersive experience thanks to the expansive viewing area on the dual-screen. With a larger screen, users are able to fully engage themselves in reading, document editing or movie watching, which is far more comfortable on a larger screen. Users can also drag and drop documents – such as images from the photo gallery to their emails – in split screen mode. Another unique and interesting user-smartphone interaction takes place through the new Mirror Shooting feature, where a digital view finder is exhibited on both the primary and secondary displays, allowing the subject to also see themselves while their photo is being taken, allowing them to take part of the creative process. In terms of safety and security, the 2-in-1 fingerprint sensor/power button offers an efficient, safe and minimalistic way for user identity authentication when powered up.
The HUAWEI Mate X runs on the multi-mode 5G chipset Balong 5000 - the world’s first multi-mode 5G SoC with 7nm process chip. It is a small yet highly performant, with the ability to support 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G. It can reduce delay and power consumption caused by data exchange between modes, support sub-6G full frequency band support and provide large network coverage – acting as the gateway to the 5G era.
The Balong 5000 is the first chip to achieve the industry's benchmark in 5G peak download rate, offering 4.6Gbps in Sub-6GHz, and is the world’s first chipset to support SA and NSA simultaneously, with the ability to adapt to different hardware requirements and formats for users and telecom operators.
While the device supports 4G thanks to the dual sim feature, its slim and foldable body houses four sets of 5G antennas, allowing users to enjoy quality 5G connectivity and high volume data transmission anywhere.
In terms of battery life, the HUAWEI Mate X houses a hefty 4500mAh, which – combined with AI smart power saving technology – empowers users with an extremely long battery life and shorter charging breaks thanks to an updated 55W HUAWEI SuperCharge adapter that tops up the battery 85 percent in 30 minutes.
The HUAWEI Mate X mirrors paints a clear image of what the future of connectivity should look like in the upcoming years, through its state-of-the-art technology and highly intricate design – empowering users tremendously and opening the door to endless possibilities.
