The Perfect Paint Job for Wood: Paint It Up

When it comes to home decoration, the use of wood can transform an ambiance and add so much aesthetic value to furniture and other wooden pieces. However, a decisive factor that ensures a beautiful and elegant appearance of your wood is the paint job, which acts as a protective layer against moisture, rime and high temperatures.

You have to keep in mind that choosing the right paint for the right wood is a serious process that goes beyond the mere selection of paint color. It requires a comprehensive understanding of the basis, composition, and purpose of each type of paint. Set your expectations, ponder on details, and you will be ready to take on your DIY wood paint project. We, at Jazeera Paints, have covered the paint options that suit a variety of purposes in addition to explaining their composition and presenting you with their prices.

Your Very Own Paint Options: An Overview

Building your understanding of wood paint should start with some knowledge of paint compositions. The first available option is water-based paint, which comes in the form of traditional latex, milk, or chalk, and it is favored for its low odor and thin layers. The second option is oil-based paint, which is either alkyd-based or plant-oil-based, and is often less expensive and more durable.

Another thing you need to keep in mind is the degree of luster for each paint option; since selecting them depends on personal taste, and the higher you go in the sheen spectrum, the more you will often end up paying. The available sheen variations -listed from lowest to highest in terms of shine- are matte, silk, semi-gloss, and gloss. Note that water-based milk and chalk paint do not have a sheen level, as they are naturally flat.

Using Stain-Blocking Primers

Now that you are aware of basic paint options, the second most important thing to learn is priming wood. Regardless of the nature of the wood you are working with if its unfinished or painted wood, applying primers is always the first step to take, because it acts as a protective layer between the paint and the wood. For water-based paint, primers block the seeping of tannins, a stained organic compound found in wood. As for oil-based paint, although it is thicker and less likely to be prone to tannin seep-throughs, applying primers is also highly recommended since it acts as a base, above which you could apply a more even paint finish. At Jazeera Paints, we offer two top-quality primers for wood paint that you can choose from: an acrylic solvent-based sanding Wood Sealer that is perfect for high penetration for SAR 88.49 and a water-based Wood Elegance Sealer known for its durability and hardness for SAR 32.2.

After choosing the right primer, you have to choose either water-based or oil-based paint to meet the needs of your wood furnishings.

Traditional Water-based Paint

The best wood paint to apply to wooden surfaces, especially those that require cleaning, are water-based paint with high water, household chemicals, stain, and block resistance. As mentioned earlier, they are known for their low odor and are fast-drying and water-cleanable. An excellent example is our Jazeera Wood Elegance Lacquer, which can be yours for SAR 32.2.

Another use for water-based paint is on decorative trim that usually have grooves that are too deep to reach. Such decorations need less viscous coating than oil-based paint, and with its thin layering, water-based paint can freely reach such grooves, resulting in a more even paint handling. Check out our high-quality acrylic solvent-based Wood Filler, which you can use for similar purposes.

Chalk or Milk Paint

Other examples of water-based wood paint are chalk or milk paint, and both are mostly used for decorative purposes. They are popular for how easily they crack, the milk paint more than the chalk one, giving them a sophisticated yet scruffy look. Their shabby-chic feel and matte luster makes them perfect for centerpieces, such as wooden hutches or headboards. Check our Chalk Paint that will turn your decorative wood into masterpieces, and it is available for purchase for SAR 77.05.

Oil-Based Paint

Most Frequently Used Wood Pieces

Moving on to oil-based paint, first, they are suited for furnishings, such as tables and cabinets, that are frequently used since they provide an unyielding layer over wood, which keeps on solidifying with time. Such a protection-from-friction feature makes these types of paint perfect for avoiding scuff marks or dents, which is more than what you could say about water-based paint that offers a softer experience with surfaces. Oil-based paint with semi-gloss or gloss sheen is the easiest to clean, so you might want to consider that in your sheen level selection. We offer you a Wood Rak Gloss, for SAR 151.8, which can even protect such furnishings from harsh weather conditions and ultra-violet radiation.

Floors

Similarly, for wooden floors bare to daily dents from boot heels, oil-based paint is your best option.  For a semi-gloss or gloss paint coat because it is much easier to clean on softer surfaces, as is the case here. Our two-in-one interior gloss topcoat, Clear Varnish, is an excellent example, and is available for only SAR 26.45. Furnishings Exposed to Moisture

Finally, oil-based paint is very effective for furnishings exposed to a lot of moisture from water. Add to that, their rot-repellent feature makes such paint the top choice for kitchen cabinets since such furnishings end up absorbing all the cooking-fume induced moisture; without the protective thick layers of oil-based paint. Kitchen surfaces are more susceptible to mildew or mold outbreak, therefore, semi-gloss or gloss paint lusters are considered the most practical to choose from because they are easy-to-clean and with smooth coats; and such coats limit the presence of mold to moisture beads on kitchen surfaces and leave the paint job intact. Nonetheless, make an exception and select a flatter luster for the inside of kitchen cabinets for them to endure the heaviness of plates and other kitchenware.

With this in mind, you are ready for your DIY project. Follow our guideline and remember to select the best quality wood paint that fits your purposes.
