The Intel® Rack Scale Design with the new Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor is being introduced in the Ericsson Hyperscale Datacenter System 8000. This will significantly expand the capacity and capabilities of datacenters, and further improve the performance of Ericsson’s applications running on the platform.
The introduction of Intel® Rack Scale Design with the latest Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor, in the Ericsson Hyperscale Datacenter System 8000, represents a significant expansion of the capacity and capabilities for datacenter infrastructure. It also improves the performance of Ericsson’s applications running on the platform and makes it possible for operators to provide services requiring very high processing capacity, in a more cost-efficient way. The new type of services could for example include massive media distribution, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things applications.
Ericsson and Intel® have previously launched the Intel® Rack Scale Design, an architecture enabling hardware disaggregation and software-defined infrastructure. This is a technology that improves utilization of resources for computing, storage and networking. By combining the Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor with software-defined infrastructure and optical interconnect, service providers will have the performance, capacity and flexibility required for a migration to a modern 5G infrastructure.
One of the solutions that will benefit from the new technology is the Ericsson virtual Evolved Packet Core. Many operators use this solution to provide mobile broadband, voice over LTE, Wi-Fi calling and Internet of Things services. The virtual Evolved Packet Gateway is a key element of the solution and has been optimized for cloud operation. With the new technology, the virtual Evolved Packet Gateway will process data at a significantly higher rate of 40 gigabits per second per central processing unit. This means that operators will be able to use the same solution to provide massive-scale mobile broadband with very high bandwidth, as well as fixed wireless access, at a reduced cost with less core network infrastructure.
The new Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor is introduced with the Compute Sled Unit 02 in Ericsson Hyperscale Datacenter System 8000.
