Surgeons at a specialized hospital in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia, succeeded in setting a record by transplanting 26 livers in 90 days.
A statement by King Fahd Specialized Hospital KFSH said that all donors underwent clinical examinations according to detailed medical standards in the preparation stage.
The marathon surgeries witnessed great successes. For the first time in Saudi Arabia, one liver was divided between two patients. Also, a liver was taken from a deceased child at the age of 2, marking it as the youngest and smallest in the history of Saudi organ transplantations.
KFSH staff are well-known globally in the field. Two of them head the Arab Liver Transplant Society and Saudi Liver Transplant Committee.
