GCCIA eyes regional expansions, Arab electricity market

The GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) has expanded from an internal GCC project into a strategic regional interconnection platform studying projects with neighboring countries, CEO Ahmed Al-Ebrahim told the Kuwait TV.

GCCIA also acts as a regional coordinator for the Arab Common Electricity Market (ACEM), strengthening the GCC’s position as a reliable regional energy hub, he added.

The power interconnection system supports GCC energy security by creating a unified power grid, enabling immediate support during emergencies and sudden outages.

“The GCC citizens currently receive reliable and uninterrupted electricity from any of the six GCC countries, as the power interconnection grid helped enhance reliability and improve the efficiency of operating GCC power networks.”

GCCIA played a major strategic role in boosting GCC countries’ readiness for major expansion plans, particularly in renewable and clean energy projects. The GCC power interconnection provides a strategic platform capable of absorbing variable energy sources and enabling countries to optimize their use across the region, especially with the launch of the electricity trading market among GCC states, which the authority is working to establish.
