Doha Bank joins forces with Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Al Wakra Municipality for ‘Beach Clean-up Campaign 2016’

As part of its efforts to call attention to the importance of preserving the environment and spread awareness on sustainable living, Doha Bank joined forces with Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Al Wakra Municipality yesterday to host a ‘Beach Clean-up Campaign at Al Wakra Beach. Organized under the theme ‘Save The Beaches For The Future’, the campaign was led by Doha Bank volunteer staff members and the Management who joined efforts to clear hordes of litter from the beach.

The initiative aimed to highlight the importance of beaches in Qatar’s ecological sustenance and in supporting aquatic life, while inspiring community effort towards keeping public spaces free of waste and pollutants.

Dr. R. Seetharaman, CEO of Doha Bank, elaborated on the importance of corporate involvement in the upkeep of the environment: “As one of the country’s leading financial institutions, Doha Bank is committed towards building a healthy society that is in harmony with nature. Our advocacy of green causes over the years has encouraged people to conduct themselves with greater sensitivity to their community’s environment. We believe that organizations can play a crucial role in facilitating a gradual behavioral change in society on issues concerning the environment.”

“Doha Bank has been at the forefront of collaborating with the government and sharing its ideals of a clean and safe environment for the people of Qatar. The country’s shores are an important habitat for several aquatic creatures, and their maintenance reflects on the positive image of Qatar which welcomes people from around the globe.”

Doha Bank thanked, Mr. Omar Thabet Al Yafey, Director of Public Relations & Media Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, on behalf of Ministry for their support.

The ‘Beach Clean-up Campaign 2016’ supports efforts by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to monitor and beautify Qatar’s coastline, as popular beaches turn into tourist hotspots. In June last year, plans of developing a souq at the Al Wakra Beach - the venue for the ‘Beach Clean-up Campaign 2016’ - forecasted increased tourist visits.

“Well-maintained beaches are an asset to the society. Not only do they support businesses that cater to visitors, they also promote an active lifestyle amongst families who frequent the open spaces to relax and bond with their children and near ones. Qatar’s efforts towards an eco-friendly future are geared towards a holistic development that encompasses both its magnificent boulevards and sunny beaches,” Dr. Seetharaman added.

The campaign is part of Doha Bank’s ‘Green Banking’ project to pioneer initiatives that increase awareness on pressing environmental issues. Prior to the clean-up drive at Al Wakra Beach, Doha Bank had hosted its annual Al Dana Green Run in January 2016, which saw participation from thousands of residents, to raise awareness on environmental sustainability and green living.
