Almarai by 2025: Reducing waste to 50%..100% of cold stores will be CFC-free

Almarai's 2020 Sustainability Report revealed that by 2025, Almarai will achieve its strategic goal of reducing waste dumped in landfills across all its sectors by 50%. In addition to that, 100% of the cold stores in Almarai warehouses will be free of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to reduce global warming.

The report added that Almarai continued to implement food waste recycling programs to benefit from it at the environmental level while expanding the implementation of these programs in some of the company's manufacturing operations.

The report indicated that during 2020, the company reduced the total waste generated by 15%, while the volume of recycled waste increased by 13%, and the food waste that the company avoided sending to landfills increased by 3% compared to 2019. Thus, the percentage of the total waste reached 59% in landfills in 2020 (compared to a baseline of 70% in 2018).

Regarding the cold stores, the report stated that 70% of the cold stores located in the sales warehouses are CFC-free. And by 2025, 100% of the cold stores in the warehouses will be  CFC-free due to Almarai's aim to reduce global warming.

It is worth mentioning that Almarai achieved an increase in the use of solar energy by 119% compared to 2019, which came as the company's keenness to implement more sustainable solutions to reduce emissions every day.
