Smart Customs Route unveiled in Gitex 2016

Dubai Customs has revealed the cutting-edge Smart Customs Route project at Gitex 2016. It is an interactive LED flooring that directs inbound passengers - as they enter the Customs area - to either go for luggage inspection by taking the red route or head to the exit following the green route.

Being a smart government implementation, the project is expected to have numerous advantages, such as streamlining passengers flow, increasing external and internal customers’ satisfaction and improving the happiness meter as well as reflecting a modern image of Dubai.

Bags Smart Customs Inspection System

Dubai Customs is also showcasing the Bags Smart Customs Inspection System; the world’s first-of-its-kind inspection system. It has been in operation at Dubai airports. It was invented by Dubai Customs to better facilitate Customs inspection staff’s functions, in a swift and innovative manner. The system aims to improve the customs experience for air travellers, ensuring smooth and seamless entry procedures. Timely information about the passenger or their luggage is automatically displayed before the inspector. Thanks to this smart system suspicious bags are screened and inspected in no more than three minutes.

The state-of-the-art system has been globally recognized as a breakthrough in airport inspection. It grabbed several local and international awards, including 2015-2016 DGEP’s Innovative Idea Award, Ideas UK’s Grand Prize in 2015, and the Best Innovation in Dubai Airports Award for the same year.

 Endangered Species Exhibition

Dubai Customs is holding an exhibition to raise awareness about endangered species, features mummies of animals which are at high risk of extinction. These mummies, which were confiscated at Dubai Customs checkpoints, are displayed in glass cases with a short description about the featured animal, highlighting its diminishing population worldwide.

The exhibit is in line with Dubai Customs’ strategy to draw public attention to endangered species and ways to protect them. DC is committed to implementing the Green Customs Initiative, rolled out by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2003, and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Environmental awareness campaigns carried out by Dubai Customs’ CSR Section aim at educating the audience as to how to maintain ecological balance and their part in curbing illicit trade of endangered flora and fauna.

Happiness-led Initiatives

Under the umbrella of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation pavilion, Dubai Customs is showcasing 8 happiness-led initiatives and innovations: The Authorized Economic Operator, Smart Workspace, Smart Inspection Glasses, Smart Inspection Lab, Smart Virtual Agent, Smart Customs Route, Bags Smart Customs Inspection System and Endangered Species Exhibition.

Dubai Customs’ participation in Gitex 2016 is aimed at reaching out to a wider spectrum of audience, particularly customers, to get them to opt for smart Customs services and applications. DC representatives introduced Gitex visitors to the department’s latest offerings.
