Saudi hospital repairs woman's pelvic fracture without surgery

Stage 4 breast cancer patient relieved from pain and starts physiotherapy

A specialized medical team at King Fahd Medical City in the capital Riyad succeeded Wednesday 12th October in repairing a fracture of the sacral bone in the pelvic area of a cancer patient by a metal screw using interventional radiology without surgery.

A spokesperson for the 2nd Riyadh Health Cluster stated that the female patient diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer suffered from pain in her lower back and had difficulties standing and sitting. After several x-rays and examinations, it was found that she suffered from fractures in more than one area, including the pelvic region.

The team who includes bone-muscle radiology and interventional nonvascular radiology consultants found that the best way to treat the case was to stabilize the fracture to relieve pain and facilitate rehabilitation exercises.

The technique used began years ago and proved its success for patients who could not undergo surgery due to their critical conditions such as osteoporosis. The procedure is done through an incision in the skin of 2 to 3 mm under local or general anesthesia, and it takes about two hours to fully conclude each session.
