Samsung Engineering reaches milestone in Saudi Arabia project

SAMSUNG Engineering Co., Ltd, revealed that it has reached a major milestone is terms of safety with Aramco’s Shaybah project. Samsung achieved the new record of 120 million man hours without lost time incident with the Shaybah Gas and Oil Project in the Shaybah region, Saudi Arabia.

This major figure of 120 million man hours, which equals to 10,000 people working 10 hours a day for over 3 years without a single accident, was made possible with safety as the highest priority and the tremendous efforts of the Samsung Engineering staff.

The Shaybah project is located in heart of Saudi Arabia with a climate of 50°C surrounded by heat waves and sand desert, 1,000 km apart from Jubail. Even with such a challenging environment, 120 million man hours without lost time incident were achieved through systematic education, founded safety management based on campaigns and safety systems.

The “Visual Safety Training Center” was implemented, where field staff experience several simulated emergency situations and therefore could learn how to avoid and respond to them in case of an actual situation.

Additionally, emergency evacuation drills were executed every month 6 times, adding up to 300 times in total. More than 40,000 potential safety issues were identified and eliminated through daily safety checks and the safety mindset of the Samsung staff.

These efforts were rewarded by the client Aramco by giving out a top grade for the PSI Project Safety Index for four consecutive years.

Samsung Engineering’s Shaybah Project Director Sangwon Lee stated: “This new record of 120 million accident free man hours was possible, due to the untiring efforts of all project stakeholders.” He further added: “I will do everything in my power to bring this project accident free to completion.”

Samsung Engineering is executing the Shaybah Oil and Gas Complex EPC project exclusively and expects the total of four packages to be completed before the end of the year.

Samsung Engineering is one of the world’s leading engineering, procurement, construction and project management (EPC & PM) companies. With experience in over 38 countries, the company provides total project management from planning and financing to construction and commissioning and has built some of the world’s largest and most complex hydrocarbon plants.
