The Saudi Ministry of Culture has obtained a set of historic documents detailing the first major expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.
The collection, which includes 271 architectural drawings, designs and photographs of the works which took place in the 1950s, have been handed to the King Fahd National Library in Riyadh.
The items are of particular historic importance in showcasing the first visions of the Saudi expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque and shed light on the significance of the Two Holy Mosques for the Saudi leadership. The first expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque dates back to the reign of King Abdul Aziz, the founder of Saudi Arabia.
