Horse riding, swimming to be introduced in public schools

The Education Ministry is introducing horse riding and swimming at public schools this coming academic year as an optional activity, forming part of its overhaul of the country’s extracurricular program for students and in line with the goals of Vision 2030.
These activities will be age-appropriate, with many previously only offered at some private and international schools. Conditions stipulated by the ministry for running these programs include that they must conform to Islamic principles and goals of the nation.
The ministry already has six extramural programs running including in culture, arts, information technology, sports, health, scouts, family and life skills. These are offered no more than three days a week, depending on the capacity and finances of each school.
Minister of Education Ahmad Al-Isa is also launching Tuesday four diverse programs for male and female pupils this summer holidays, including recreation, summer jobs, tourism and volunteer work.
This program is called “My Holiday” and will be paid for by the government. They are linked to universities in coordination with other authorities and are part of the country’s plans to ensure students develop leadership skills. The ministry has emphasized the importance of school administrations in ensuring that the goals of Vision 2030 are met, according to a report in Aleqtesadiah on Monday.
