Gamers Without Borders – the US$10million charity esports event crowned its second International Elite tournament champions and gave a further donation of US$2million to humanitarian aid partners.
The best of three match-ups in GWB’s Dota 2 tournament saw Team Liquid, Royal Never Give Up and Deboosters come out on top, clinching the title and a combined US$950,000 from the event’s mammoth prize fund to donate to a charity of their choice. It also meant that the three teams have qualified for a massive gaming and esports festival in Riyadh this summer, with an additional US$4,000,000 prize pool going directly towards the players and the organizations.
Team Liquid was crowned the champions of Europe after bouncing back from their defeat to Tundra Esports in the semi-finals (2-0), having to dig deep and find their way back to the finals with a clean sweep over Gaimin Gladiators and Nigma Galaxy. Team Liquid then managed to get their revenge on Tundra Esports in an epic finale (2-1), securing the 1st prize of US$350,000.
Deboosters clinched the title of the Saudi Arabia region after a great display throughout the tournament, beating 01 Esports (2-0) in an edge-of-the-seat affair for both teams and their thousands of fans watching online.
The Asian tournament delivered one of the most exciting face-offs between Royal Never Give Up (China) and Boom Esports (Indonesia). The Chinese side showed great resilience after losing to the Indonesian team in the Upper Bracket finals (2-1). They went on to beat EHOME (2-0) and book a spot in the grand finals, then seeing it through with a (2-0) win against Boom Esports and bagging US$350,000 of the US$2million charity prize pool.
The Saudi Esports Federation, the regulating body in charge of nurturing elite gaming athletes and developing the gaming community and industry in Saudi Arabia, organized the six-week-long mega-series Gamers Without Borders in technical partnership with ESL Gaming as a means of uniting gamers in a way that would make a real difference by donating US$10million to address a variety of urgent humanitarian needs in the world today.
With US$5 million charity prize fund still to play for, the world’s best gamers will go head-to-head in more globally popular esports titles such as Rocket League in GWB Elite series up till June 7.
